For a couple weeks I've been using ICQ on a secondary computer to connect to ICQ. Yesterday, even that didn't work. Something of an issue since that's how I keep in touch with a main client.
Luckily, I found this old thread on the Archlinux forum and, after a little deduction, had a full solution figured out.
In a nutshell, here's the Empathy solution:Find out your ICQ account tag according to Mission Control.
$ mc-tool list | grep icq
(which outputs your tag, e.g.:)
haze/icq/_34554913498
Use Mission Control Tool to change your settings for that ICQ account. Make sure you include the full account tag, as in the samples below.
$ mc-tool update haze/icq/_34554913498 bool:use-clientlogin=0
$ mc-tool update haze/icq/_34554913498 bool:use-ssl=0
It's okay to make these changes while Empathy is running, even while the ICQ account dialog is open.
For Pidgin, it's simpler because both "Use clientLogin" and "Use SSL" are checkbox options in the account's Advanced tab. Just uncheck both.
